Whitewater rafting season is officially underway on the Pigeon River, as outfitters across East Tennessee welcome guests back for unforgettable outdoor adventures following months of recovery after the 2024 Helene floods.

With restored infrastructure and renewed energy, the river is once again flowing strong— offering guided rafting trips for all skill levels, from serene family floats to adrenaline pumping rapids. The reopening marks a pivotal moment not only for the rafting community but for the entire region, which depends on outdoor recreation as a vital driver of tourism and local economic health.

The 2024 flooding temporarily paused rafting operations and brought significant challenges to the outfitters, guides and small businesses who rely on the river season. Thanks to months of restoration work and community collaboration, the 2025 season has launched in full force, with a deep sense of resilience and gratitude.

“The return of rafting represents more than just a reopening—it’s a symbol of resilience, teamwork and the spirit of this incredible community,” said Olwen Claiborne, Marketing Director for Smoky Mountain Outdoors (SMO). “Seeing the river alive again and filled with happy guests is a powerful reminder of why we do this work.”

Outfitters including Smoky Mountain Outdoors (SMO) and Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) are now offering guided trips, backed by trained guides, robust safety protocols and enhanced facilities rebuilt after the floods. Early booking is encouraged as interest in outdoor travel surges heading into the peak summer months.

With its natural beauty and thrilling rapids, the Pigeon River continues to be one of the Southeast’s top destinations for adventure seekers. As the 2025 season kicks off, visitors are invited to experience the river in all its restored glory—and support the businesses that make this unique East Tennessee tradition possible.
