August 21, 2017
This month Gatlinburg is blessed to be a prime viewpoint in the direct totality route of the highly anticipated Total Solar Eclipse 2017. While our skyline is no stranger to stunning views, the hemisphere will be graced with a total solar phenomenon that has not been seen in 38 years on August 21, 2017. In anticipation for this exciting event, planning for the use of proper eye safety and possible traffic delays is advised in order to make your Solar Eclipse experience all the more idyllic.
Viewing the Eclipse: The Eclipse will take place in the area around 1PM – 4PM EST, with the climax of the event occurring at approximately 2:30PM. Proper eyewear for viewing the eclipse safely will be offered at the Sevier County Library for free while supplies last and information on how to use glasses correct can be found at the official NASA safety page.
Traveling to the Eclipse: With August being an already popular time to travel to the Great Smoky Mountains, Eclipse viewers are recommended to plan their journey to the area appropriately, taking into consideration traffic and darkening atmosphere conditions that may cause difficulty while driving. Updates and alerts can be found daily at Great Smoky Mountain National Park website and can be used as helpful resources for planning.
