Fall Foliage in the Smokies

2009 Autumn Leaf Report - November 6

The sun is shining bright and the sky is clear blue, making the last of the autumn viewing period in Great Smoky Mountains National Park an excellent time to enjoy the final days of fall color. The weather forecast is predicting the same weather pattern through the weekend. There is still a variety of trees that are displaying color, although somewhat muted bearing more of the brown hues. Many trees, too, have shed their leaves after autumns peak passed through the lower elevations last week. Above 3,000 feet, all the trees are void of leaves.

This time of year is perfect for hiking, especially along the lower elevation trails. Bears, chipmunks, squirrels, and other wildlife are busily gathering acorns, walnuts, and other natural foods where they are concentrated. Thanks to the unusually abundant rainfall received through October, streams and waterfalls are swift and sparkling. Some trails to consider: Deep Creek, Little River, Boogerman Loop, Old Settlers, Smokemont Loop, Old Sugarlands, Kephart Prong, and Abrams Falls.
