Since 1987, Gatlinburg has welcomed the New Year in grand style with the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop and Fireworks Show from the Gatlinburg Space Needle. The family friendly celebration is one of the largest organized New Year’s Eve events in the nation.
Nearly 50,000 people will gather around the intersection of Parkway and Historic Nature Trail at the base of the Space Needle late Thursday night, December 31 to ring in the New Year. At the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2016, fireworks will blast off the rooftop of the 400-foot tall Space Needle with special music choreographed for the fireworks show produced by Pyro-Shows of LaFollette, Tennessee. The Space Needle has added rhythmic LED lights to the tower, making for a spectacular display.
Leading up to midnight, there will be free music in the area adjacent to the Gatlinburg Convention Center near traffic light number 8, which is the perfect vantage point for viewing the fireworks show.
“New Year’s Eve Ball Drop and Fireworks Show is a 28 year tradition in Gatlinburg. The ball drop and fireworks from the Space Needle create a unique experience for our visitors,” said Jim Downs, Special Events Director for Gatlinburg Convention and Visitors Bureau. “No doubt, we will have a big crowd to help us usher in 2016 in a big way.”
Before the party begins, you can have a romantic dinner at one of the restaurants that will be offering New Year’s Eve celebration specials. Then we’ll get the party started at 10 p.m. with free entertainment near the Space Needle.
After the show, toast the New Year in style at one of our distilleries, wineries or breweries.
Sleep in New Year’s Day in your cozy cabin or warm hotel room, and then enjoy a New Year’s Day brunch. How about a stack of flapjacks and a cup of steaming coffee, or yummy Southern-style biscuits and gravy?
You’ll find plenty to do all weekend long in Gatlinburg. Take the family to Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies and enjoy the antics of the penguins at the Penguin Playhouse. Or ride the Aerial Tramway up to Ober Gatlinburg for a day of skiing, snowboarding, tubing and ice skating. Peruse the unique handicrafts and artwork offered at dozens of quaint shops and studios along the Parkway and the Arts and Crafts Loop. Of course, you’ll want to experience the winter beauty of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
As the daylight fades, hop on board the Trolley for a ride through Gatlinburg. Every year, downtown turns into a winter wonderland adorned with millions of lights, and their glow won’t fade until long after New Year’s.
As 2015 winds down, you can find lots of detailed information on New Year’s celebrations at your fingertips on the official Gatlinburg app. Have you downloaded it yet? If not, download it here.
